Full Sun Perennials

5 Common Full Sun Perennials

Keeping full sun perennials in your garden is a great way to add color and fragrance to an otherwise usual yard. They are perfect for yards that do not contain very many trees. They thrive in full direct sunlight. So you will never have to worry about them shriveling up, even in the hottest of summers. If you have an area that needs to be spruced up, you can add full sun perennials to enhance your landscape.

These types of plants do well in a dry sandy soil. If the soil is heavy and contains a lot of moisture, the full sun perennials can rot and the root system will become damaged. They also like soil rich with organic matter, so if you are planning on keeping healthier plants it may be a good idea to use fertilizers to help the soil along. When you enrich the soil for any type of plant, it grows bigger and produces more blooms and fruit.

There are many different kinds of full sun perennials to choose from. This all depends on your particular taste in plants. If you are looking for a colorful flower or for a medicinal herb, they are both considered full sun perennials and each kind would make a great companion plant.

Echinacea is one of the most popular and commonly owned perennial. It has light green foliage and a dark burgundy to pink bloom that appears from mid spring to early fall. It can grow up to 18 inches in height and it can be placed in an area that has a bit of shading. It is known for being used as an herb to promote a healthy immune system. But recent studies have shown that it should only be used every few weeks because over use can reduce the effect. Echinacea is also known for anti bacterial properties and it is a commonly used aphrodisiac.

If you are looking for a plant that produces a flowery bloom and an exceptional fragrance, than lavender may be the right choice for you. Lavender has light green foliage and long separate stems. On top of the stems there are unusual looking purple flowers. Instead of having a rounder series of petals, they seem to cluster in an upward direction. A smaller petal sits on top of the rest. This flowery plant is used around the world specifically for the fragrance. It is used in make up, perfumes, lotions and as an antiseptic.

The lilium candidum or Madonna lily is perfect for people who love pure white flowers. This plant has smaller long leaves that are found on a longer tan colored stem. The blooms have 5 petals and they form a small bulb on the bottom of the flower but the top appears to look like a regular lily. The bloom has a pleasing fragrance and the plant can grow up 5 feet in height and each stem can hold 8 to 15 blooms. In China and Japan people use the Madonna to enhance foods and the plant is a symbol of purity.

One of the most companion friendly full sun perennials is called baby’s breath. It is a long stemmed plant that produces tiny white blooms. These tiny flowers have a slight pleasing fragrance and these plants can be used in many kinds of floral arrangements. They are usually always used in a bride’s bouquet and they can be dried and used for decoration or for potpourri.

Ornamental onions can be a nice way to jazz up the garden area. They have longer stems and produce a round flower with many small purple blooms. They grow up to 24 inches in height and they also make good companion plants. You can place them just about anywhere to add shape and color to your garden.
